Critical View students write reviews as part as a larger curriculum including comparative literature, critical thinking and creative response. In addition to seeing and reviewing shows, the students participate in pre-show lectures by local theatre critics, playwrights and actors and other activities including post-show question and answer sessions.
The following reviews result from the performance of Jersey Boys that the Critical View participants attended on March 19, 2008.

The catchy tunes of the 1960’s flew through the audience taking those in the older generation back to slumber parties and to boy’s night out. For the generation of today it made them re-think about some of those familiar tunes that had heard but never knew where they originated.

Jersey Boys follows the path of a young group of harmonizers from Newark, New Jersey who hopes to make it big in the music industry. In order to live out their dreams, they constantly change the group in many ways: outfit changes, different members, different names, so much that they even begin to forget who they are themselves. Then they find Gordio whose natural talent for writing songs, along with high-pitched warbler Frankie Valli (with an “I”!) brings the group to stardom.

Jersey Boys slashes through the Orpheum Theater with a totally new grave and elegance…the music was pretty touching and [it] was sure a play where you be humming the songs after.

I liked the whole story of a group that became great. They struggled though many things and there were times where they split to live different lives. The challenges that they faced were what every group must to become great. The Jersey Boys were all impacted in some way for better or for worse and they will always live in people hearts for what they accomplished.

The overall experience was very enthralling. I loved the play. I would definitely go see this play again!

As I sat down in the theatre I noticed a dark stage that appeared to look like a cage. I wasn’t too sure as to what this play was going to start out as. When the play initially began, I noticed there was a drum set on stage, something that I have never seen in the two years that I have been attending this program [Critical View]. Frankie Valli began to sing as only he could do, and falsettoed his way into our hearts.

The music was wonderful. I know that it was a remake of the original thing, but they performed it amazingly. I found myself singing along with most of the songs and trying to dance in my seat. I really enjoyed it. My parents listened to these songs and I think that growing up with them made me enjoy the musical even more than I would have if I didn’t know the music.

…you can only imagine how many songs I knew. I was singing along and hooked into the atmosphere throughout the whole play. It was a ride for the whole audience young and old.

| This classic East Coast musical set in the 1960’s was lively and by far a favorite. This was genuinely an enjoyable production; it kept the attention of the audience. Throughout the whole thing there was never a dull moment. It was very energetic and upbeat with familiar tunes that kept you singing along. It consisted of real life events that could be related to, which kept the interest of everyone.

| Jersey Boys can definitely be my “Earth Angel” any day! Back again and hotter than ever, the gorgeous quartet will have all of the girls raging and all of the boys either envious or competing for some space in a girl’s heart.
